Jowar Dishes to Include in Your Diet & Enjoy its Health Benefits!

Roti is the staple food in all Indian households. And our mothers always tries to feed us at least 2 chapatis in every meal of the day. Consuming roti/chapatis provides you with much-needed carbohydrates. But when it comes to losing some extra kilos, the first instinct that comes to our mind is either reduce the number of chapatis or stop eating chapatis. But what we are not aware of is certain flours can be a healthy alternative and also help you in maintaining your weight. One such flour is Jowar.

Known as “Sorghum”, Jowar is rated among the top healthy grains in the world. I remember my grandmother mentioned that earlier jowar was used to feed animals. But now, it is being included in the diet and is considered more nutritious than wheat. And is now touted as the “new quinoa” because it is gluten-free and its whole grain goodness.

So now, let us see Jowar’s amazing benefits:

Health Benefits of Jowar:

  • Gluten-free – An excellent alternative for people who suffer from “gluten intolerance”
  • Higher concentration of fibre – A single serving contains over 12 grams. A fibre diet lowers the risk of cardiac-related diseases, obesity, and diabetes. A high fibre diet also improves digestion.
  • Helps in weight loss – Higher fibre content keeps you full for a longer time, keeping the hunger pangs at bay.
  • Good for Diabetic people – Jowar is a complex carbohydrate and as a result, it is digested slowly. Thus, prompts a more gradual rise in blood sugar.
  • Rich in Protein – 1 cup of Jowar provides you with 22 grams of protein.
  • Iron content – 1 cup of Jowar contains 8.45 milligrams of iron. To absorb the iron and attain the maximum benefits, you should pair it up with meat or vegetables rich in Vitamin C.
  • Maintains Calcium levels – Has a good amount of magnesium in it, which helps in increasing calcium absorption.
  • Nutrients rich Jowar – It is rich in Vitamin B3, and also has potassium and phosphorous. It also contains around 20 micronutrients, traces of copper, zinc and is also rich in antioxidants.
  • Maintains the cholesterol – It regulates the plasma LDL cholesterol concentration while improving the HDL levels in the body.
  • Boosts Blood circulation – Iron and copper in jowar improve blood circulation. While iron develops red blood cells, copper enhances iron absorption.
