In this blog, I will be telling you all about dandruff and some tips & tricks to handle this stubborn dandruff. So, let’s get started…

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a very common scalp condition that causes, dry, itchy skin flakes on the scalp. This is caused by the buildup of yeast-like fungus, Malassezia globosa, around the base of your hair follicles. The fungus feeds off the skin’s sebum and excretes end products onto the scalp which can irritate the scalp skin, resulting in dandruff.

This does not mean you are keeping your scalp dirty. It can happen to any scalp type, be it oily, dry, clean or dirty. The cause is still in the research stage as it appears to be complex.

Some Facts:

  • Many of us have a misconception that dry scalp is the reason behind dandruff flakes. But, it is just due to an overgrowth of the harmless yeast.
  • These flakes can not only be on your scalp but can be in eyebrows, along the sides of your nose or anywhere where you have more oil secretion.
  • Itchy Scalp doesn’t always mean dandruff. You could also have allergies from certain harsh chemicals or skin inflammation or psoriasis.
  • Stress, HIV, Parkinson’s disease, Stroke can also lead to dandruff conditions.
  • Teenagers or people above 50 years are more likely to get dandruff.
  • Dandruff is not curable but can surely be prevented and controlled.
