Benefits of Coconut Oil and Some Simple DIYs Hair Masks

In my last few blogs, I have shared with you the benefits of coconut to attain youthful skin and also some amazing benefits of including coconut in your diet. You all are well aware that coconut oil is very good for your hair. I am pretty sure that you might have the opportunity of getting a good nariyal tel champi from your grandma or your mom at some point in your life. And, after an amazing and relaxing oil champi, you might have found each hair strand properly oiled and combed.

Am I right?? Am I making you nostalgic or making you want a good nariyal tel ki champi from your mom??
Because, while writing this, I am sure I want one good relaxing coconut oil champi.

Coconut oil, an unsung superhero of our hair, has been an age-old remedy, especially in India. While it may be a one-stop solution for most hair problems, but has been the most effective in preventing hair loss. In our current lifestyle, we often see major hair loss, dandruff issue, hair thinning issue and many more such hair problems.

In such hair problems, let us see how coconut oil protects our hair:

Coconut Oil for your Hair:

  • Lauric acid in coconut oil binds the protein in hair, protecting the roots and strands from breaking and split-ends
  • Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties prevent any bacterial problems as well as keeps dandruff away
  • Act as a natural conditioner, keeping your hair soft and shiny
  • A good nariyal tel champi (coconut oil massage) improves the blood circulations, further nourishing the hair follicles
  • The high-fat content may help in calming scalp irritation, flaking, or itching and also helps in sealing in moisture
  • Using a small amount of coconut oil on wet hair before drying or using heat styling may protect hair from water and heat damage

So, as we see that the nutrient content in coconut conditions and improves the overall health of our hair. Regularly massaging your hair with coconut oil will keep your hair soft and strong from the roots.

In India, we use coconut oil as a hair mask before showering and as a leave-in conditioner after showering. So, now let us see some interesting and simple DIY with coconut oil and some kitchen ingredients.

DIY Hair Masks:

Aloe Vera gel and Coconut oil for Itchy Scalp

Benefits:
Aloe vera gel has antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties which will leave your hair looking and feeling healthier. Vitamins A, C and E in this hair mask will soothe the itchiness and clear out dandruff, while Vitamin B12 promotes hair growth.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel

  • Mix both the ingredients and massage on your scalp, targeting the roots before working it through the rest of your hair
  • Leave the mask for 20-30 minutes
  • Rinse with lukewarm water and finish your hair routine
  • Use this mask once to twice a week. you can also keep it overnight to get a healthy dandruff-free scalp

Banana and Coconut Oil for Frizzy Hair

Benefits:
A high amount of antioxidants and potassium in bananas nourishes softens and protects the hair from split ends and breakage.

Ingredients:
1 ripe banana
1 tablespoon of coconut oil

  • Peel and mash a ripe banana
  • Add coconut oil into it and make a smooth paste
  • Massage it onto your hair and leave it on for 10 minutes to 15 minutes
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water and continue your hair routine as normal
  • Use this hair mask one to two times a week for better results 

Honey and Coconut oil for Dry Hair:

Benefits:
Honey has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which bring back the moisture your locks have been craving for. 

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon raw honey
1 tablespoon coconut oil

  • Mix coconut oil and honey in a saucepan and heat the mixture on low flame to get a smooth paste
  • Let the mixture cool down until it’s lukewarm
  • Wet your hair, and then apply the mixture massage on your scalp, targeting the roots before working it through the rest of your hair
  • Leave it for 40 minutes.
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water and continue your hair routine as normal
  • Use this hair mask once a week

Lemon Juice and Coconut Oil for Oily Hair

Benefits:
Lemon juice is a great cleanser. The antifungal properties in lemon juice promote scalp health by reducing oiliness, removing the dirt and pollutant as well as keeps the pores unclogged. Lemon juice and coconut oil together help to fight the dandruff problem, reduces itchiness and leaves your hair feeling soft.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon coconut oil

  • Mix lemon juice and coconut oil in a bowl
  • Optional- You can also add tea tree oil for added dandruff-fighting and moisture benefits
  • Apply the mixture to the hair
  • Leave on for 15 minutes
  • Rinse with water and finish your hair routine as normal
  • Use this mask twice a week for better results

Olive Oil and Coconut oil for Conditioning your hair

Benefits:
Olive oil and coconut oil combo are said to conditions your hair and fight dryness. Thus, boosting your hair growth and giving you soft and frizz-free hair. The omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants have been proven to improve dullness, prevent breakage and strengthen all hair types.

Ingredients:
An equal amount of coconut oil and olive oil

  • Mix both the oils in a bowl and heat them
  • Massage the solution onto your hair and scalp.
  • Soak a towel in hot water, strain out the excess water and wrap it around your head
  • Leave the towel for about an hour
  • Wash off the oil with a mild shampoo
  • Follow this process regularly

Okay, so one more quick tip – You should be mindful of how much coconut oil you are using to make these hair masks. As too much coconut oil can leave your hair greasy and dull. So remember, a small amount goes a long way. You should also always thoroughly wash your hair after masking to clear your scalp of any oil buildup.
