A Debate which we all Have – Brown Rice vs White Rice

Rice is being consumed by more than half of the world in some or the other way. Being an Indian, there is no meal complete without a bowl of rice. Indian households mostly prefer the taste of white rice over brown rice. And, is the same story in my household too. Is it the same in yours too??

So as of now, we all are aware that there are two types of rice, brown and white. Everybody nowadays is touting the health benefits of brown rice over its white counterpart.

But is it actually better? Why does everyone keep on recommending brown rice? Let us find out!

Starting with understanding the anatomy of our staple diet, Rice. So basically, white rice is essentially brown rice that has its outer brown layers scrapped, therefore is termed as processed food. Once scraped, it loses large quantities of dietary fibres, vitamins (vitamin B), minerals (manganese, iron, phosphorus) and essential fatty acids. The only benefit you get is a better taste of the white rice bowl.

Brown rice has many advantages over white rice:

Higher in Dietary Fiber:

100 grams (3.5 ounces) of cooked brown rice provide 1.8 grams of fiber, whereas 100 grams of white rice provides only 0.4 grams of fiber.

Rich in Vitamins and Minerals:

Lower Glycemic index (GI):

Brown rice has a GI of 50 and white rice has a GI of 89, meaning that white rice increases blood sugar levels much quickly. Consuming food with a higher Glycemic index can lead to health conditions like type 2 diabetes.

Brown rice contains plant compound, Lignans:

Lignans help in reducing the amount of fat in the blood, lowers blood pressure as well as decreases inflammation in the arteries. And, this all results in reducing several risk factors for heart diseases.

Increases Blood Antioxidant levels:

The bran in the brown rice is rich in antioxidants. And, consuming whole grains like brown rice helps in preventing chronic diseases.

Weight Control

Last but not the least, consuming brown rice not only helps in maintaining the body mass index (BMI) but also help in reducing the love handles.  

Concluding:

Looking at the advantages, brown rice is considered to be a more healthful option. But, consuming white rice once in a while is not a bad option either. In the end, it all matters on the portion of the rice you consume.
