Tea Tree Oil and Its Astounding Benefits

I always thought that tea tree oil is also a form of green tea, but I was proved wrong while I was researching to write this blog. We get the tea tree oil from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia (known as the tea tree), a small tree native to Australia. The leaves are crushed to extract the oil, which is then used to treat various skin and health issues, which will be discussed in this blog.

Melaleuca alternifolia tea tree

The tree oil is widely available as both diluted (ranging from 5%-50%) and undiluted (100% pure). Aborigines have been using the oil as traditional medicine for centuries. But, before moving to the benefits, you should be aware of the precautions of using the oil.

Precautions:

  • Avoid applying tea tree oil directly to the skin. Dilute it with a carrier oil (coconut or almond oil).
  • If you are using it for the first time, do a patch test before to make sure your skin doesn’t react.
  • For every drop of tea tree oil, add more than 10 drops of carrier oil (2-3 drops to 12 drops of carrier oil).
  • Be careful while using the oil around the eye area. Exposure can cause redness and irritation.

Now, let us see the benefits of tea tree oil from the top.

Tea Tree Oil for Hair

With the growing pollution and never-ending dandruff issue, our hair looses its moisture and gets weak. And, with this busy life, it often gets difficult to take proper care of our hair.

But not to worry, sharing with you all one more tip.

One of the compounds in Tea tree oil is terpinen-4-ol, which shows antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties, making it an excellent cleansing agent. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties make it even more beneficial for healthy hair.

Mixing the tea tree oil in your oil, shampoo or hair mask helps fight the dirt and bacteria which accumulates in the scalp and clogs the pore. It also prevents any dryness or damage and moisturises your scalp. Use this essential oil to make your hair follicle more receptive to nutrition and supplements, promoting the overall healthy hair growth.

Moving onto the largest organ in our body – Skin.

Tea Tree Oil for Skin

Tea Tree Oil

With its many beneficial properties, tea tree oil does wonders on our skin as well. When used topically, it aids a few skin conditions while improving the overall skin appearance. The amazing perks for our skin are:

  • Act as a powerful weapon for acne:
Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 9 parts of water. Apply it twice daily to minimise the acne.
  • Anti-inflammatory property soothes the skin itching and irritation, preventing the dry skin as well.
Add a few drops of tea tree oil into your favourite moisturizer and use it regularly.
  • The oil’s antiseptic property combats the oily skin. And even better if your sunscreen has tea tree oil in it.
Add a few drops of oil into your daily moisturiser or face toner or sunscreen. You can also mix 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in your face mask to get an oil-free look.
  • Tea tree oil’s antibacterial compounds fight the bacteria responsible for body odour. It can be used to make a safe and effective deodorant.
  • Tea tree oil contains anti-inflammatory compounds, which may be helpful for relieving psoriasis flares.
Combine 10–15 drops of tea tree oil with two tablespoons of melted coconut oil. Apply this to the affected area 2–3 times per day.
  • Tea tree oil reduces inflammation by increasing the activity of white blood cells. And, thus speeds up the wound healing.
While dressing your wound, add few drops of tea tree oil for faster healing.

Few more advantages of Tea tree oil…

Tea tree oil in nail fungus

The worst thing that can happen to nails is a fungal infection. Not at all dangerous but can be ghastly. Though there are medications for it, still some of us prefer a more natural approach. And, one of the best natural approaches is Te Tree Oil, easy to use and effective.

Mix 4-5 drops of tea tree oil to 10ml coconut oil. Use a cotton swab to apply it on the affected area and let it dry. I will recommend you all to use a cotton swab so that the fungus spreading to other areas is avoided. You can also soak your foot for 20 minutes, a few times a week in the mixture of tea tree oil, coconut oil and warm water

Healing time depends on the severity and how your body reacts, but usually, it takes a few months. It will be best if you continue applying the mixture for few more days so as to avoid the fungus return. And, the most important thing is – Keep your nails trimmed, cleaned and dried as much as possible. Wash your hand properly, especially after treating your nails, to avoid infection.
