Primary Colour Teas for Weight Loss and Other Health Benefits!

Are you thinking that I wrote the title wrong?? Colours of teas are usually brown, black or green. Then what is this primary colour tea?? If you remember in school, our art teacher told us about the 3 primary colours – red, blue and yellow. 

Similarly, we have teas in these primary colours too – red, blue and yellow tea. They are now gaining popularity all over the world. And, today I will be sharing with you some of its amazing benefits. Listen up guys, they are beneficial in WEIGHT LOSS too!

Red Tea:

Starting with Red tea or Hibiscus Tea. I guess some of you might have heard this name as well. As you might have guessed right, Hibiscus tea is made from dried parts of the hibiscus plant (Hibiscus Sabdariffa). This gives the tea a deep red colour. 

Origin: North Africa and Southeast Asia but now grows in many tropical and subtropical climates.

Benefits of Red Tea:

  • Historically, African consumed red tea to decrease body temperature as well as to soothe a sore throat
  • Caffeine and calorie-free tea
  • Some studies state that hibiscus tea can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure (reflects different aspects of the pressure exerted by your blood as it pulses through your arteries.)
  • Increases drug-detoxifying enzymes which aid in reducing liver damage and the fatty liver
  • Helps in weight loss by decreasing body fat
  • Some studies also show that red tea can reduce the growth and spread of plasma, mouth, prostate and stomach cancer cells

However, some care should be taken while consuming red tea. Overconsumption of red tea can be harmful to people with diabetes or high blood pressure. Also, it is not advisable to consume red tea with hydrochlorothiazide (a type of diuretic used to treat high blood pressure) or chloroquine (a medication for malaria) to prevent an interaction. Always inform your doctor as some herbs have the potential to interact with medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not drink hibiscus tea. Drinking hibiscus tea in moderation is generally considered safe. 

Blue Tea

Blue tea is being used for centuries but has gained popularity recently because of its many health advantages. Derived from the Clitoria ternatea plant, also called the butterfly-blue pea, blue-pea, or Asian pigeonwings. 

Origin: Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, and Malaysia

Benefits of Blue Tea:

  • Blue tea burns belly fat and protects your body from fatty liver disease
  • Catechin EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in blue tea speeds up the calorie-burning process by boosting metabolism
  • Antioxidants show anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties which help in body detoxification
  • Blue tea also helps in shedding water weight accumulated due to water retention in your body
  • Findings reveal that blue tea has antipyretic properties and mimic effects similar to that of Paracetamol. the study showed a significant reduction in the body temperature for up to five hours. It reduces fever by causing blood vessels underneath the skin to expand; this cools the blood by increasing the blood flow and reducing the temperature.
  • Proanthocyanidin, a health-boosting antioxidant in blue tea, increases the blood flow to the capillaries of your eyes. Thus acting as a natural remedy in eye ailments treatment. This method was quite popular in Bali and Indonesia
  • The proanthocyanidin compound also protects against oxidative damage done to cells by free radicals. And, Cyclotidesfound in Blue tea is free-radical fighting peptides.
  • Rich in flavonoids which boosts your immune system and fights off diseases.
  • In ancient times, it was used as a stress reliever and has an adaptogenic effect on your body in reducing stress.
  • It inhibits the absorption of excess glucose from food, keeping the blood sugar levels in check
  • Effective in lowering high cholesterol levels
  • It is caffeine-free and thus gives a calming benefit without the jitters
  • Compound Anthocyanin helps in increasing the blood flow in the scalp, strengthening the hair follicles
  • Blue tea’s anti-glycation property gives your skin a youthful glow

As of now, there are no known side effects of blue tea. However, over-consumption of Blue tea may cause nausea and diarrhoea. Pregnant and lactating women are also advised to consult their doctor before drinking blue tea. Moreover, inform your doctor if you are taking any sort of medications and get their approval before drinking blue tea.

Yellow Tea:

Many people have not heard of this yellow tea. This is the most uncommon tea and Do not get confused with turmeric water. Yellow Tea is derived from the Tea Plant Camellia Sinensis and has a sweet, bright and floral taste with a gentle fruity, floral aroma. Yellow tea is sometimes referred to as Huang cha.

Benefits of Yellow Tea:

  • Yellow tea enhances mental alertness and also promotes longevity
  • Has up to 3 times as many antioxidants as green tea giving several health benefits
  • Takes care of the free radicals in the body
  • Antioxidants in it enhance blood circulation to the epidermis of the skin, keeping your skin moisturized
  • Maintains lower body weight by burning fat and improves the rate of metabolism
  • Prevents absorption of cholesterol from your food into the body
  • Yellow tea inhibits liver inflammations and thus helps in the treatment of liver-related disorders
  • Lowers the low-density lipoprotein (bad fats) level in your body
  • Boosts the production of collagen keeping your skin tight and firm

It is advisable not to over-consume yellow tea as it contains caffeine and might lead to addiction, high blood pressure, jitters, and hyper-alertness. Yellow tea also contains fluoride component, which according to WHO, is healthy in a limited quantity. However, excess fluoride accumulation can lead to bone and skeletal deformities. Also, it is very necessary to buy a branded yellow tea as quality is also very important.

Ways to Consume Red, Blue and Yellow tea:

Hot Tea:

Pour your hot water in a glass or mug. Add in your dried flower petals or tea leaves and let it steep for around 15 minutes. You’ll see a beautiful colouration when the leaves have released the majority of their colour. Strain your tea and your cup of tea is ready to be enjoyed.

Primary Colours Lemonade:

If you wish to have a cold refreshing tea to beat hot summers. Then just follow the steps mentioned for hot tea. Let it cool down. When the tea comes to room temperature, add ice cubes to it. Stir in the lemon juice and see your tea changing colours. Red tea turns into a ruby colour, while Blue tea turns purple. You can also add 1 tbsp honey if you want it sweet.

So, these primary colour teas, red, blue and yellow tea not only helps you in weight loss but also has many health benefits. And they are very easy to make too. You also have many options to choose from. You can have it cold or hot or with a lemon twist. It will surely benefit your overall health.
