Daily Winter Skincare Routine to Follow During Colder Months

It is foggy outside, and you are wearing a large sweater, sipping on some hot cocoa with marshmallows floating over it… Winter brings in a lot of perks but also makes you feel lazy and want to snuggle up in the blanket.

But chilling winters mean a moisture-stealing climate that leads to dry, dull, and cracked skin and there’s also the ultimate problem of chapped lips. The cold winds are still at bay, and NOW is the best time to start preparing to prevent the skin problems that winters bring along with it.

It is very important to switch up your skincare routine during the colder months so your skin can look and feel its best during this season. Let’s be honest, who would want to pump up the moisturizer and reapply lip balms every ten minutes?

So, let us tell you about the winter skincare routine that will help your skin to be in great shape during the winter season.

Winter Skincare Routine

Use a moisturizing cleanser:

As the temperature decreases, the level of humidity also drops, and our skin starts losing its moisture to the dry air around us. So, drop your regular cleanser and switch to a moisturizing cleanser that can help hydrate the parched skin and wash away the dead skin cells without leaving the skin feeling too tight or dry.

Gentle exfoliation:

Winter is accompanied by a dull complexion, due to the accumulation of dead skin cells. Gently exfoliate your skin twice a week to get rid of dirt and dead skin cells. This will result in a cleaner, brighter, and shinier skin.

Hydrate your skin with Hyaluronic acid serum:

Exposure to chilly and harsh winds during the winter season leads to dry skin. Therefore, you must include a hydrating serum in your routine. One of the best hydrating ingredients is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to retain moisture and keep your skin hydrated. Use a hyaluronic acid serum right after cleansing your face to lock in the much-needed moisture.

Moisturize day and night:

Cold weather strip off the natural moisture of your skin which is why it is critically important that you choose winter skincare products that are moisturizing. Look for ingredients like cocoa butter and wheat germ oil in your moisturizer. Cocoa butter retains the skin’s moisture and nourishes it to make it more supple. On the other hand, wheat germ oil is a rich source of vitamin E that protects the skin from drying out. Make sure you apply a moisturizer twice a day, once after a hydrating serum in the morning and then again at bedtime.

Do not forget the shield – SUNSCREEN:

It is a common practice to not wear sunscreen during winter. The warm sun rays might feel pleasant, but the UV rays can still damage your skin. Do not skip sunscreen even if you are indoors. During winter, you can use a mineral-based SPF as they are light, easy to use, ocean-friendly, and gives your skin the freedom to breathe too.

Lip balms are your friend:

Our lips tend to get extra dry and chapped during winter. Make sure you have a moisturizing lip balm at hand to reapply whenever you feel your lips are getting dry.

Some other winter skincare tips:

  • Use a humidifier: If you have cracked up the heating system high indoors, your skin is likely to feel completely dried out. Since the humidity is low both indoors and out, it is advised to use a humidifier by your bed. This will help replenish the top layer of your skin by preventing the air from becoming too dry.
  • Limit physical exfoliation: Do not over-exfoliate your skin, as due to dry and cold weather your skin barrier is already compromised. It is better to avoid scrubbing altogether and to use liquid exfoliants if you already have dry and sensitive skin.
  • Avoid hot showers: It might seem tempting to stay in the shower with hot water running, however hot water strips off moisture from our skin, hence it should be avoided. You can either limit your shower time or take a bath with lukewarm water.
  • Stay hydrated: Keep your skin hydrated from the inside by drinking plenty of water. Since in colder months, the dry air outside can make our skin more parched than usual, it is important to keep our skin hydrated enough to retain moisture.

Have healthy skin this Winter season!
